To successfully host the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) required a power solution of the highest quality. With the games enjoyed by millions around the world, any interruptions to the power supply for the broadcast of the games could have had a negative effect on both FIFA and the LOC. Spread across 10 stadiums in 9 cities, the distribution of high quality power to all stadiums and an international broadcast center was a critical issue to be considered by the LOC.
Working in partnership with Shanduka Group, Aggreko designed a 70 MVA power package that provided both technical and domestic power. A fully redundant technical power supply of 28 MVA of power was provided for the uninterrupted broadcast of the tournament to viewers around the world. A domestic power package of 42 MVA in total was distributed across the 10 stadiums for the reliable operation of the stadiums and their facilities during the tournament. A total of 253 generators were supplied to the 10 stadiums and International Broadcast Center along with technicians and engineers who operated and maintained the various sites to produce a continuous and reliable power supply. Aggreko provided the LOC with a complete package which included everything from design and mobilisation to operation and decommissioning.
Aggreko provided 28 MVA of high quality power for the television and radio broadcast of the tournament which transmitted the feeds globally. Power packages were installed at broadcasting hubs at each of the 10 stadiums. The International Broadcast Centre (IBC) alone needed 8 MVA of continuous technical power for 24/7 broadcasting.
Aggreko installed 42 MVA of distributed power to the ten host stadiums. The domestic power supply included power to the accreditation and ticket centres, security checkpoints and the hospitality stands, food and beverage and merchandising facilities. Aggreko was also responsible for power to the LED signage surrounding the football pitches at each stadium.

A major factor contributing to the award was the successful supply of an 18.4 MVA power project for the Confederations Cup in 2009.
